After a quite long period of tests, user reports and recompilations (mostly), the develia.org archive has been updated for use with slackware-current. This implies -let's make this clear- that most of the tarballs aren't going to work anymore with slackware 11.0 (due to the glibc upgrade in -current). Many tarballs have been recompiled to use the new file layout of slackware-current (no more /opt/kde and /usr/X11R6), others have been updated to the most recent version, others have been removed (cause their software is now officially available in the distribution, etc.). After some time, slackware-current started to evolve again. Tarballs update. I've been mostly busy with Audacious 1.3 development in my (short) free time; anyway, here's a good amount of new packages, while waiting for slackware-current to evolve again. First, KDE 3.5.6 tarballs are now available in the archive. There's also the new version (4.4.0) of XFCE, the nice gtk-based desktop environment. I've decided to migrate from dbus-0.62 to dbus-1.0, this required dbus-dependent software to be recompiled; after this update, all of the packages with dbus dependency in the archive should use dbus-1.0; if I forgot to update one of them, let me know. I've also updated pango and cairo, since it's possible to do it without breaking binary compatibility with slackware-current. I've released AMIDI-Plug version 0.5. This is an important release, with major feature enhancements. AMIDI-Plug has become a nice MIDI subsystem, with runtime-loadable backends that can handle and play MIDI events in their distinct way and that bring better flexibility and portability. In example, the ALSA dependency is now optional (the only element requesting it is the ALSA backend) so it's now possible to compile and use AMIDI-Plug on non-Linux systems. Currently there are three backends included in source code: ALSA, FluidSynth, dummy. This version is also included in Audacious 1.1.0. More info available in the projects area.

Tarballs update. Glib-2.10 has been officially added to slackware-current, so I've removed glib-2.8.6 from the archive. More, I've recompiled kdelibs-3.5.2 without the fast-malloc option that doesn't work properly with glib-2.10; the new kdelibs build is available in desktop section. Seamonkey (heir of the dear old mozilla suite) has been added to slackware-current too, and programs requiring mozilla libraries (like gaim with nss) will be able to pick them from seamonkey. The gcc compiler has been updated in slackware-current (from 3.3 to 3.4), and I'm going to recompile some develia.org tarballs. The compiler update brings a change in the C++ ABI version (from 102 of gcc 3.3 to 1002 of gcc 3.4/4.0); I'm going to recompile with gcc 3.4 all those tarballs that contain c++ software (even if this is not strictly necessary for all of them). I'll start in the next days with Qt and KDE, this way I'll also update KDE to the recently released 3.5.1 version. Stay tuned!

I've decided to wait a little before switching completely to GTK+ 2.8; for now, I'll keep using GTK+ 2.6 and the packages available on develia.org will be compiled with this GTK+ version, for a couple of simple reasons: (1) GTK+ 2.8 introduces cario dependency, meaning that programs compiled against GTK+ 2.8 won't work on systems that adopt GTK+ 2.6 or older; (2) I've experienced some stability issues with GTK+ 2.8 and I think it's a good idea to wait for further releases to fix them, in the meantime I'll stick with the proven stability of GTK+ 2.6. The packages of GTK+ 2.8 (gtk+2-2.8.1, atk-1.10.1, pango-1.10.0, glib2-2.8.1) will remain available in the "experimental" corner of libraries section, and those of GTK+ 2.6 (gtk+2-2.6.10, atk-1.9.1, pango-1.8.2, glib2-2.6.6) will return back in place. After a summer break, develia.org is back online! It was a partially forced break, due to hardware replacement and migration to OpenBSD (yep, back to the blowfish). Many news in this summer period, like the longed for rejection of software patents, given from European Parliament with almost unanimous vote (648 contrary, 14 in favour and 18 abstained) on 6 July. Of course there are many news in opensource world, like the release 3.4.2 of KDE and the release 2.8.0 of GTK+, the first Cairo-based GTK+, that is raising much curiosity. It will be possible to test it right now, since it's one of the many updates that I've already published on develia.org; read the next article for the detailed list.

I've added a new howto that I've recently written, it describes the setup and usage of infrared devices on Linux with LIRC (Linux infrared remote control) and related programs. The howto refers particularly to the Creative live!drive infrared device, but many chapters of the howto are useful to learn how to use any infrared device on Linux.

A cyrus-sasl tarball has been introduced in slackware-current. I've recompiled kdebase and kdepim (second build) to fully support it (this will grant more choices for SMTP authentication). I've also made a second build of kdelibs and kdewebdev, after applying the latest official patches with security fixes.
